French far-right leader Marine Le Pen was charged on March 1 for posting on Twitter gruesome images of purported atrocities by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), prosecutors said.

French President Emmanuel Macron faces a backlash over plans to tighten immigration law as the number of asylum seekers soars, with aid and emergency agencies accusing his government of planning mass expulsions, according to Reuters. 

 French far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who has been largely out of the spotlight since stinging electoral defeats, on Saturday sought to reclaim the mantle of main opponent to President Emmanuel Macron, which polls now attribute to the far-left, reported Reuters. 

The new President of France Emmanuel Macron said he would “defend France and defend Europe” during his victory speech, Sunday night in Paris. The pro-European centrist politician, 39, who had the support of the French establishment against populist far right leader Marine Le Pen, received 66.01% of the vote against Le Pen’s 33.9%, according to the official count.

CNN reports that Le Pen opened the debate by immediately skewering Macron – a centrist – as a “cold banker” that would raise unemployment levels and allow elites to “plunder” the economy.
