Panathinaikos held in Super League opener, loses striker Berg to injury

Panathinaikos suffered a traumatic debut in the Super League on Sunday as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Levadiakos and lost star striker Marcus Berg for up to three months.

The Swedish player fell awkwardly following a 58th minute challenge at the Olympic Stadium and suffered a fractured collar bone. He will reportedly undergo surgery and be out of action for two to three months.

Panathinaikos got the upper hand in the battle for entry to the Champions League playoffs after snatching a goalless draw at Standard Liege on Wednesday.

If anything, the Greek cup holders missed a great chance to score an away win that would have seen them all but through to the last stage before the Champions League groups.

PAOK beats Atromitos to stay close to Panathinaikos

Two deadly crosses by Lino and a penalty save in injury time by Panayiotis Glykos kept PAOK in the running for a spot in next season’s Champions League qualifiers with its 2-1 win at Atromitos, although the Thessaloniki club remained three points behind Panathinaikos that saw off Asteras Tripolis 1-0 at home.
