Greece failed in a bid on Wednesday to secure a quick cash payment from the euro zone rescue fund to help stave off potential bankruptcy next month, raising pressure on Athens to deliver a convincing reform programme within days.

Berlin does not see any basis for Greece to get the next tranche of its bailout immediately to prevent it from becoming insolvent but if Athens implements its reforms sooner than expected, it could get paid early, a German finance ministry spokesman said.

Greece?s eurozone partners on Friday increased the pressure on the new government to request an extension to the country?s bailout before an emergency summit of eurozone finance ministers on Wednesday, with officials rejecting Greek proposals for a ?bridge? agreement to be put in place until the end of May so that a new arrangement can be found.
