One of world’s smallest manned helicopters made in W Slovenia

Tolmin – More than a decade ago Miro Črv started developing a small coaxial helicopter at his home in the hills of western Slovenia. This year his product is being shipped to buyers world-wide, mostly to the US.

The SCH-2A is one of the lightest manned coaxial helicopters in the world. Mirocopter, the business established by Črv, will sell about ten of them this year.

Author Luna Jurančič Šribar wins Mira award

Ljubljana – The women’s section of Slovenian PEN has conferred this year’s Mira Prize for outstanding women authors on younger-generation writer Luna Jurančič Šribar, who, the jury says, focuses on women characters, rebellious and strong heroines who have their destiny in their hands despite hardships and life on the margin of society.

Portorož hosting WTA 250 tournament

Portorož – The Slovenian seaside resort of Portorož is hosting the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) circuit this week for a WTA 250 tournament with a prize money of 235,238 US dollars.

The tournament will open with a ceremony later on Monday followed by an all-Croatian match between Donna Vekić and Ana Konjuh.

Unions oppose bill opening door to Uber as minister argues in favour

Ljubljana – Trade unionists have came out against legislative amendments that would provide the legal basis for ride hailing platforms such as Uber arguing they often violate labour rights. Refuting the charge, Infrastructure Minister Jernej Vrtovec said the goal was to make transport services cheaper and more modern.

Slovenia’s Lampič wins Cross-Country World Cup sprint globe

Oberstdorf – Slovenian cross-country skier Anamarija Lampič has been awarded the small crystal globe as the overall World Cup winner in the women’s sprint discipline as the International Ski Federation (FIS) decided to cut the season short after seven sprint events being held, with Lampič leading the standings.

Ancient Petra a ghost town as pandemic hits Jordan tourism

For over two millennia the ancient city of Petra has towered majestically over the Jordanian desert. Today its famed rose-red temples hewn into the rockface lie empty and silent.    

As the novel coronavirus spread around the world, Jordanian authorities imposed a lockdown, and the last tourists left on March 16, a day before the Hashemite kingdom closed its borders.
