Education minister pledges further help to Ukrainian refugees

Brussels – Slovenian Education Minister Simona Kustec reiterated her condemnation of Russian aggression at a session of EU education ministers in Brussels on Tuesday as she called for support for Ukrainian students, researchers and teachers at all levels of education, the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport said in a statement.

Janša, Orban see minorities as a bridge for cooperation

Lendava – Slovenian and Hungarian PMs Janez Janša and Viktor Orban stressed as they signed an agreement on cooperation to develop the border areas populated by the countries’ respective minorities in Lendava on Monday that the minorities were a “bridge for cooperation between two friendly countries” and economic ties between them brought double benefit.

Microplastics found in 75% of Slovenian rivers

Ljubljana – To highlight the problem of plastic pollution, over 1400 students in 100 Slovenian schools joined forces with scientists within the EU’s Plastic Pirates project. Over the course of one year, young people helped scientists to sample microplastics in rivers, which contaminated more than three-quarters of the rivers analysed.

Education minister remains in office

Ljubljana – Simona Kustec remains the minister of education, science and sport after 42 MPs voted in favour of a motion of no confidence, four short of the required majority, and 39 coalition MPs voted against.

The centre-left opposition contributed the ouster votes, whereas MPs of the National Party (SNS) and all but one deputies of the Pensioners’ Party (DeSUS) group abstained.

Education minister says criticism meant to silence her as woman

Ljubljana – Education Minister Simona Kustec responded to criticism mounted against her in a motion of no confidence as it is being debated in parliament on Friday by presenting achievements of her ministry so far. She sees the criticism of her work coming from the left-leaning opposition as being based on “mechanisms for silencing women”.

DeSUS MPs are not planning to change course

Ljubljana – After the council of the Pensioners’ Party (DeSUS) adopted a resolution yesterday denying the government any further support, the party’s MPs said they were planning to continue with the same course of action as so far where they agree what their vote will be on each legislative proposal on a case-by-case basis.

Education trade union voices discontent on World Teachers’ Day

Ljubljana – The Education, Science and Culture Trade Union of Slovenia (SVIZ) expressed its frustration with the authorities on the occasion of World Teachers’ Day. Teachers are still being ignored despite proving their contribution to a functioning society during the epidemic, said Branimir Štrukelj, the secretary general of SVIZ.
