Eight garbage trucks belonging to the Malevizi municipality in Iraklio on the island of Crete were engulfed in flames while parked at the municipal garage in an apparent arson attack.

Fire crews quickly responded to an emergency call at 2 a.m. on Wednesday; however, the waste management vehicles were completely destroyed, with only two trucks escaping unscathed.

Two suspects, believed to have brutally beaten Greek-Canadian Emanuel Kakoulakis in Heraklion, Crete, are now in police custody as of Monday afternoon (September 2nd).

At least five people were arrested on Tuesday as part of a major police operation on the island of Crete to dismantle an antiquities theft ring, which has so far led to the seizure of ancient objects, including seven coffins and vessels, whose value, according to initial estimates, exceeds 500,000 euros.

A government task force visiting flood-stricken Crete on Sunday announced a package of support measures that will include the immediate disbursement of 400,000 euros to the municipality of Malevizi and immediate payment of compensation to those affected by the disaster from State Support funds.
