China on Saturday named Li Qiang, a close confidant of top leader Xi Jinping, as the country's next premier nominally in charge of the world's second-largest economy now facing some of its worst prospects in years.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping was awarded a third five-year term as president Friday, putting him on track to stay in power for life at a time of severe economic challenges and rising tensions with the U.S. and others.

As with Deng Xiaoping's launch of economic reforms in 1979 and his decision a decade later to crush pro-democracy protests with force, it will — for better or worse — radically alter the country's course.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Monday received a letter from Chinese President Xi Jinping, the president's office has announced.

In it, the Chinese leader thanked Vucic's for his congratulations on the occasion of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and Xi's re-election as secretary-general of the party's Central Committee.
