PAOK draws at AEK and is one point from finishing top

PAOK snatched a precious draw at AEK on Sunday and needs one point in its last game of the play-offs, at home against Panathinaikos, to earn Greece's second spot in the Champions League qualifiers. Unlike AEK, that is out, the Greens stayed in the running for the top spot beating Panionios in Mladen Petric's emotional home farewell, as he is about to retire.

Mantalos goal brings AEK on top in play-offs

AEK has climbed to the top of the play-off mini-league after beating Panionios 1-0 on Friday for the second round of games, in the process that will determine which club will follow Olympiakos to the Champions League qualifiers.

The recently crowned Cup winners needed a Petros Mantalos goal on the 57th minute to beat the strong Panionios defense at the Olympic Stadium of Athens.

AEK Athens fires Gustavo Poyet

Uruguayan Gustavo Poyet was fired by AEK on Tuesday, one day before the Athens club was due to face Atromitos in a first leg Greek Cup semi-final.

Former Sunderland coach Poyet had told Greek media earlier in the day that he would be leaving at the end of the season.

Press reports said AEK chiefs were unhappy that Poyet had told the media before informing them.

AEK gets former Sunderland manager as new boss

Former Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet from Uruguay sealed his return to football with a deal to coach AEK Athens until the end of the season. The boss, sacked in March, has been linked with the vacant role at Aston Villa but ends up with AEK after the Greek Super League moved quick to sign a contract. He replaces Traianos Dellas who resigned last week.
