2016–17 Northern Rakhine State clashes

Rights group has called for targeted sanctions and an arms embargo against the Myanmar military in response to an offensive that has sent 410,000 Rohingya Muslims fleeing to Bangladesh to escape what the United Nations has branded ethnic cleansing.

Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh could die due to a lack of  food, shelter and water, given the huge numbers fleeing violence in Myanmar, an aid agency warned on Sept. 17, as authorities began moving people to camps to streamline the distribution of help.

Pressure mounted on Myanmar on Sept. 12 to end violence that has sent about 370,000 Rohingya Muslims fleeing to Bangladesh, with the United States calling for protection of civilians and Bangladesh urging safe zones to enable refugees to go home.

The United Nations' top human rights official on Sept. 11 slammed Myanmar for conducting a "cruel military operation" against Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state, branding it "a textbook example of ethnic cleansing."

Turkey's first shipment of humanitarian aid arrived on Sept. 6 in Myanmar's Rakhine state, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) has said.       
Some 1,000 tons of emergency aid packages containing rice, dried fish and clothing were delivered to the Social Services Ministry in the Rakhine state at a handover ceremony, according to the statement.  
  

The World Food Programme (WFP) has suspended food aid in Myanmar's violence-scorched Rakhine state, as the humanitarian situation deteriorates with a surging death toll and tens of thousands - both Rohingya Muslims and ethnic Buddhists - on the move and diplomatic efforts piling. 

At least 71 people including 12 security forces were killed as Rohingya militants besieged border posts in northern Rakhine State, Myanmar's authorities said Aug. 25, the highest declared single day toll since fighting broke out last year.
