Egyptian police have arrested a one-time campaigner for President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi who became a critic of the former military chief, an official said on May 27.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi's victory in last week's election was never in doubt, but the vote produced a surprise runner-up - an unusually large number of invalid ballots, suggesting a possible protest vote against Sisi or the election itself.

Egyptians began voting on March 26 in a presidential election set to deliver an easy win for incumbent Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, with turnout the main focus after all serious opposition withdrew complaining of repression.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said in an interview broadcast on March 20 that he had wanted more contenders in next week's presidential election to give voters greater choice, but the country was "not ready."

Five Egyptian public figures, including two former presidential hopefuls, called Jan. 28 for voters to boycott the March presidential election after the withdrawal of all candidates but the incumbent Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Egypt has hanged four men convicted by a military court of killing three military students in a bombing in 2014, security sources said on Tuesday.

Egypt and Russia signed a contract to build the first nuclear power plant in the North African country. This happened during a visit to the Russian side of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The NPP's construction contract was signed at a ceremony on state television, attended by Vladimir Putin and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Saeed Hussein Khalil el-Sisi, AFP reported.

Gunmen who attacked a mosque on Friday in Egypt's North Sinai brandished an Islamic State flag as they opened fire through doorways and windows, killing more than 300 worshippers, including two dozen children, officials said on Saturday, Reuters reported. 

Militants killed 184 people at a mosque in Egypt's north Sinai region on Friday, detonating a bomb and shooting at fleeing worshippers and ambulances, state media and witnesses said.

President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has arrived in Cyprus on Monday paying his first official visit to the island ahead of a trilateral meeting among Cyprus, Greece and Egypt on Tuesday.
