Accession of Turkey to the European Union

The European Union has to correct its mistakes on its position over the ongoing row in the eastern Mediterranean and engage in a constructive dialogue with Turkey, Turkey's top diplomat has said, suggesting that the entire Europe will suffer if it fails to do so.

Germany accused Turkey on Monday of preventing German forces belonging to an EU military mission from fully searching a Turkish cargo ship that they suspected of taking weapons to Libya, a move Ankara said was a violation of international law.

The European Union and Turkey got closer during the fight against novel coronavirus, which claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, a senior Turkish official said on May 22. 

Turkey is open to sincere and meaningful cooperation with the EU for a common future, Turkey's foreign minister said on May 9 to commemorate Europe Day.

Europe Day, also known as the Schuman Day, is observed on May 9 each year to mark the Schuman Declaration in 1950 that proposed the formation of a European Coal and Steel Community, the predecessor to the EU.

Turkey has slammed the European Union over its remarks on the Turkish drilling activities in the eastern Mediterranean and called on Brussels to "stop being used" by Greece and Greek Cyprus in the name of archaic solidarity.

Despite political obstacles, dialogue between Turkey and the EU has benefited amid the mutual fight against the novel coronavirus pandemic, a senior Turkish diplomat said on April 22. 

The head of the EU delegation to Turkey on April 10 said the bloc cooperated with Turkey to fight against the novel coronavirus.

Christian Berger told in a live broadcast that Turkey is one of the most important trade partners of the EU.

Turkey blasted Greece's prime minister on April 3 after he sent a letter to European leaders urging a reduction in financial support to Ankara amid a refugee crisis.

In a phone call on April 3, Turkey's president and the head of the European Council discussed bilateral relations as well as regional issues.

Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the EU's Charles Michel also discussed efforts to fight COVID-19, said Turkey's Communications Directorate.
