Air passenger transport decreased by 76.2% in the first quarter of 2021, from 3,851,100 passengers to 916,500, due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, according to data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Turkey's Istanbul Airport maintained its lead in European traffic charts with 604 flights on April 14, the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol) said on April 18. 

Turkish students studying in the Canary Islands are back in Turkey due to severe sandstorms on the western coast of the Sahara Desert and the Atlantic Ocean.

The families of students had asked for help on social media from the Turkish Foreign Ministry upon the cancellation of flights due to the sandstorm.

Due to transport strikes in Spain, difficulties in transport for Bulgarian tourists at the end of August are possible, the Foreign Ministry warned.

Sofia Airport is 63rd in terms of number of passengers in 2017 from about 150 airports of EU countries, according to Eurostat data on today's 7th of December, which is marked as International Aviation Day.

Last year, around 6.5 million passengers passed through Sofia Airport, which is 30% more than in the previous 2016, according to European statistics.

Bulgaria may attract tourists by advertising as a destination at Spain's airports, bus and train stations and in the AVE high-speed trains, said Spain's Minister Of Public Works Ana Pastor at a meeting with Bulgaria's Tourism Minister Nikolina Angelkova.
