Yemeni troops backed by Arab coalition air strikes killed more than 800 members of al-Qaeda in an attack on a southeastern provincial capital held by the group for the past year, the coalition said April 25.

Pro-government forces recaptured an oil terminal as well as the city of Mukalla, which was considered a jihadist stronghold, military sources said.  

Dozens of al-Qaeda militants reclaimed the town of Azzan in Yemen's Shabwa province on Feb. 1, residents said, exploiting a security vacuum in the country's south as a civil war rages. 

An apparent US drone strike killed five Al-Qaeda suspects in the extremist network's southeastern stronghold of Mukalla, a government official said Aug. 27.

Four suspected al-Qaeda militants were killed overnight in an apparent U.S. drone strike in Mukalla, the southern Yemeni city that the extremist group overran in April, a local official said on Aug. 23.

Al-Qaeda has confirmed that its second-in-command, the chief of its powerful Yemeni branch, was killed in a US drone strike, in the heaviest blow to the jihadist network since the death of Osama bin Laden.

Turkey and Pakistan have called on ?all Yemeni groups? for a peaceful solution to the country?s crisis, while pledging support for Saudi Arabia?s actions, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on April 3.
