Climate change climate change has forced Italy and Switzerland to redraw their borders in the Alps, which were defined by the line of glaciers that have begun to melt due to rising temperatures.

Part of the affected area will be below Mount Matterhorn, one of Europe’s highest mountains, and close to several popular ski resorts.

The remains of a climber discovered in the Swiss Alps last year have been identified as a British mountaineer who went missing 52 years ago, local police said on Aug. 31.

It is the latest in a series of discoveries of remains of long-missing climbers revealed as the Alp's glaciers melt and recede because of global warming.

The latest measurements of the glaciers below the Triglav and Skuta peaks have shown that the only two remaining glaciers in Slovenia have shrunk and thinned significantly this year due to the unfavourable snow and temperature conditions, and that they are under threat of disappearing.

Innsbruck – Slovenia’s Žan Kranjec finished 3rd as the men’s giant slalom on the Rettenbach glacier above Sölden, Austria opened the Alpine Ski World Cup season on Sunday. The race was won by Marco Odermatt of Switzerland, and Austria’s Roland Leitinger finished second.

Turkey's first female ultramarathon runner, Bakiye Duran, 62, is set to run in the Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) that will be held Aug. 23.

Duran will run in the 300-kilometer UTMB, first held in 2003. The race will cover France, Italy and Switzerland and competitors will circle Mont Blanc massif in the Alps.

At least nine people are reported to have been killed after a cable car collapsed near Lake Maggiore in northern Italy.

The cable car, which connects the resort town of Stresa and the Mottarone mountain in the Piedmont region, had 11 people onboard, according to Italian media reports.

Italian authorities closed two roads and evacuated several mountain huts after experts warned that one of the glaciers of the Mont Blanc massif could collapse. About 250,000 cubic meters of ice are off the southern slopes of Grand Jorasses Peak.

Greek film editor Giorgos Mavropsaridis, known from his cooperation with filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, became a member of the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, joining 842 new members from 59 countries.
Mavropsaridis was nominated last year for an Oscar for the 2018 period comedy The Favourite and won an Eddie award for the Best edited feature film for the same movie.
