Police bans rallies in Thessaloniki as protest against documentary planned

Police in Thessaloniki issued a ban on public gatherings on Tuesday amid concerns about a rally that was being planned to protest a screening at the northern port city's annual documentary festival.

According to reports, a rally was being planned at 7 p.m. outside the festival's flagship Olympion cinema on downtown Aristotelous Square.

Nine people jailed in Greece will be tried Monday over accusations they harassed and threatened two 21-year-old transgender persons in the northern city of Thessaloniki.

The nine were remanded after appearing before a prosecutor Sunday. Twelve other people, all minors, were released provisionally pending trial on the same charges before a juvenile court.

Police arrest 21 people in Thessaloniki after attack on trans youths

Police arrested 21 individuals for attacking two transgender people late on Saturday in the northern port city of Thessaloniki, including 11 minors who were later released under orders of a prosecutor. 

They are facing charges of serial verbal abuse with racist motives, while two of the adults were additionally charged with attempted serial simple bodily harm, with racist motives.

Aristotelous Square revamp on the cards

The Thessaloniki municipal authority is meeting Monday to discuss a tender for giving the northern port city's iconic Aristotelous Square a much-needed facelift.

The aim of the competition is to spruce up and modernize an area of 32,500 square meters in the city center, stretching from the coastal front to Egnatia Avenue, but also to make it more pedestrian- and wheelchair-friendly.

PAME union announces protest rally ahead of TIF opening

Greek Communist-affiliated trade union PAME on Thursday announced a rally for September 7, ahead of the opening of Thessaloniki's annual International Fair (TIF).

The union accuses ruling New Democracy of implementing measures that undermine labor rights, following the "anti-labor legacy" of leftist SYRIZA.

The rally will be held on central Aristotelous square, at 6 p.m.
