More than 1 million homes and businesses in Louisiana and Mississippi, including all of New Orleans, were left without power on Monday, as Ida, one of the most powerful hurricanes ever to hit the US mainland, pushed through on Sunday, AP reported. The damage was so extensive that officials warned it could be weeks before the power grid was repaired.

Hurricane Ida blasted ashore Sunday as one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the U.S., knocking out power to all of New Orleans, blowing roofs off buildings and reversing the flow of the Mississippi River as it rushed from the Louisiana coast into one of the nation's most important industrial corridors.

U.S. media report that at least one person was killed, as well as that numerous parts of Louisiana were left without electricity. Many seek help and rescue because their houses are surrounded by water. There is a danger of flooding.

Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a State of Emergency for New York City on Saturday in response to the impact of Hurricane Henri on Sunday primarily on Long Island.

Tropical Cyclone Amphan has developed in the Bay of Bengal and is heading north towards eastern Indian states of Odisha and West Bengal before bearing down on western Bangladesh.

This enormous and slow-moving cyclone has a cloud band which is about 2,200km (1367 miles) wide and a well-defined 15km (9 miles) round eye. It continues to strengthen.

Hurricane winds of 255 km/h have been recorded by weather stations in Iceland.
