Ceasefire

Turkish and Russian delegations, which have been holding talks for the past two days regarding the implementation of the fresh cease-fire in Idlib, have reached an agreement "to a large extent," the Turkish defense chief has said.

A Russian military delegation arrived in the Turkish capital of Ankara on March 10 evening, for talks on the details of the ceasefire.

The agreement consists of only three articles. First, a ceasefire starting from Friday March 6. Second, a security corridor will be established between Syrian rebels and government forces. Third, Russia and Turkey will jointly patrol the security corridor from March 15.

The new deal touched on the migrant crisis but did not include a solution.

Russia considers a ceasefire in Libya a basic condition for the start of a political dialogue, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Dec. 31.

Speaking at a news conference in Moscow, Lavrov said no conditions must precede the cessation of hostilities.

As a regional power with leverage on the ground, Turkey is a key player in restoring peace in Syria, a Russian diplomat who took part in negotiations to bring a ceasefire in Aleppo has said.

Sudan announced on Oct. 16 a "permanent ceasefire" in the country's war zones even as a key rebel group threatened to pull out of peace talks, accusing government forces of bombing its territory.    

Sweden and Kuwait have presented a revised draft U.N. Security Council resolution calling for a 30-day ceasefire in Syria that diplomats said could win backing from Russia.

Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım has described the Astana meetings on Syria as a "diplomatic success," expressing his hope that the process will continue in Geneva through talks for a political solution.

Iran characterized Turkey’s accusations against Tehran regarding the truce violations as “unconstructive”.

Iran is instead blaming the rebel forces for breaking the ceasefire agreement.

Turkey and Russia, as the guarantors of a ceasefire deal between the Syrian regime and opposition groups, will establish checkpoints in Syria in order to monitor the truce and possible violations.

The Hürriyet Daily News has obtained the ceasefire document, which provides details of a mechanism for monitoring the ceasefire and a schedule for the planned peace negotiations.

Yemen's warring parties have agreed on a ceasefire from April 10 followed by peace talks, a U.N. envoy said March 23, raising hopes of a breakthrough in a conflict that has devastated the country.
