Frozen Egg Melange Containing Fipronil Was Found in Bulgaria

A notification was received by the European Commission's Rapid Alert System about a shipment of frozen egg melange containing fipronil and delivered from Germany, to the amount of 1,440 kg, the press office of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry announced on 5th of September, reported the Bulgarian National Television.

40 Countries are Affected by the Scandal with Fipronil Infected Eggs

The scandal of eggs contaminated with fipronil has affected 40 countries, the Austrian daily Die Presse writes.

According to media reports, 24 of the 28 countries of the European Union have reported the presence of their eggs or egg products contaminated with fipronil. There are also 16 countries outside the Community, including the United States, Russia, South Africa and Turkey.

Bulgarian Food Safety Agency Takes Prevantive Measures Against Fipronil Contamination

 

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency has announced it is taking steps to prevent the contamination of poultry farms with fipronil.

A shipment of yolk powder, contaminated with fipronil has been intercepted before reaching two production plants.

No Evidence of Infected Eggs and Products With Fipronil on Bulgarian Market

''There is no evidence of infected eggs and products with fipronil in our country'', said Dr. Tatyana Nikolova, Head of Food Control at the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BSAF), according to bTV. 

"Fipronil preparations in our country are not allowed in buildings with birds. In Western Europe were used by dishonest farmer, "stated Dr. Nikolova.

Hungary Pulls Tainted Egg Products From Shelves

Hungary on Tuesday (Aug 15) became the latest European country to withdraw egg products imported from Germany containing the insecticide fipronil, Channel News Asia, reported. 

The EU member state's food safety agency Nebih said it had ordered the withdrawal of Asian-style frozen foods imported from Germany by a Hungarian catering trade supplier.

EU calls eggs talks as scandal spreads to Asia

The EU on Aug. 11 called an emergency meeting to stop "blaming and shaming" over the insecticide-tainted eggs scandal as it emerged for the first time that the crisis had spread to Asia.

Hong Kong, Switzerland and 15 European Union countries have all received eggs contaminated with the chemical fipronil, which can harm human health, the European Commission said.
