Thousands join protests, strikes over train disaster

Tens of thousands of people took part in protests and strikes in Greece on Thursday amid lingering anger over last month's train collision near Tempe, the deadliest in the country's history. A group of protesters hurled petrol bombs at a police cordon near Parliament in central Athens, prompting MAT riot officers to respond with tear gas and sound grenades, disrupting a largely peaceful rally.

Rain or shine, there’s a strike

In the popular 1965 Greek political satire "A Matter of Earnestness" ("Iparche kai filotimo"), Andreas Mavrogialouros, an ornamental minister, visits his constituency to inaugurate an obstetrical clinic. While there, he discovers that his associates have been fooling him for years, using state funds to enrich themselves.

Widespread strikes on Wednesday

The Greek Civil Servants' Confederation (ADEDY) announced a 24-hour nationwide strike in the public sector on Wednesday, March 8.

In its press release issued on Monday, ADEDY has also called for a mass protest rally at 12:30 at Klafthmonos Square in central Athens.

Greek public sector workers to strike over pension bill on Feb. 18

The civil servants' union ADEDY has called a 24-hour strike for February 18 in protest at the conservative government's legislation on pensions which is to go before a vote in Parliament this month.
According to ADEDY, the bill perpetuates austerity measures introduced by governments during the crisis years, including auxiliary pension cuts of up to 50 percent.
