The centre of Athens is under siege due to the parallel protest rallies being held by federations, trade unions and unions as part of the 24-hour general strike.

Pireos street is closed from the height of Iera Odos, Panepistimiou street, Stadiou street from the height of Americas street, while all the streets around Syntagma are closed.

The teachers’ 24-hour strike planned for Wednesday, October 23, 2024, has been ruled illegal by the Athens Single-Member Court of First Instance. Despite this, the strike is still expected to proceed, as ADEDY (the Confederation of Public Servants) has called for a new strike in support of educators.

The General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) and the Civil Servants Union (ADEDY) have announced plans for nationwide strikes in November in response to ongoing economic challenges.

The federation of public sector employees, ADEDY, has announced a nationwide 24-hour strike scheduled for Wednesday, November 13.

The union representing public hospital workers, POEDIN, has called a 24-hour strike on Monday and is organizing a protest rally at 11 a.m. on downtown Athens' Syntagma Square. 

Opposition SYRIZA leader Stefanos Kasselakis on Wednesday vowed that if he were elected to office, he would restore the 13th and 14th salaries paid to public sector workers prior to the economic crisis as extra holiday pay. 

"Your real salary has decreased too much," he told a group of civil servants in Athens on Wednesday, a day after the union, ADEDY, held a nationwide strike.
