May 24 holds significant cultural and historical importance for Bulgarians, marking the celebration of the Bulgarian Education and Culture, and Slavonic Literature Day, known as "Saints Cyril and Methodius Day." This day commemorates the brothers Cyril and Methodius, who are credited with devising the Glagolitic alphabet, which later evolved into the Cyrillic script.

In preparation for May 24, the Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, as well as the Day of the Bulgarian Alphabet, Education and Culture, and Slavic Literature, the National Security Service is implementing security measures in Sofia's city center. The festivities will commence with a formal procession at 10:30 a.m., commencing from the Archaeological Museum.

Bulgaria's dedicated research vessel, the Saints Cyril and Methodius, is slated to dock at the Livingstone Island's South Bay, marking a pivotal milestone in the country's Antarctic exploration. Carrying Bulgarian Polar researchers, this expedition began its journey from Varna on November 8 and is anticipated to conclude its mission by April 2024.

Tsar (Emperor) Samuil (Samuel) was the ruler of a large medieval state, which the majority of modern historical scholarship considers to be the Bulgarian Kingdom with a center in the territory of today's Republic of North Macedonia.

As you may probably know, Bulgaria is the only country in the European Union that uses the Cyrillic alphabet. Our entry into the EU in 2007 made Cyrillic the third official alphabet in the EU after the Latin and Greek ones. On May 24th we celebrate the Slavonic Literature and Culture. Today, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Kliment Ochridski - one of the most important Bulgarian medieval writers, founder of the Ochrid Literary School and key figure in the formation of the Old Bulgarian Language.

Bulgaria celebrates May 24 as the day of the Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slavic Script, the official Day of Holy Brothers St. Cyril and St. Methodius - the Byzantine scholars who wrote the first Slavic alphabet in 855 A.D., and translated into Old Bulgarian the Bible and the religious literature of Orthodox Christianity.
