Greek firefighters contain a blaze at a major oil refinery that injured 3 workers

Three workers suffered light injuries during a fire Tuesday at a major oil refinery west of Athens that prompted Greek authorities to issue an evacuation alert for the surrounding area.

The blaze near the seaside town of Agioi Theodoroi, some 70 kilometers (40 miles) from Athens, was contained following a large firefighting operation, authorities said.

Yacht captain, officer jailed ahead of arson trial over island fire

Greek judicial authorities have jailed the captain and first officer of a yacht ahead of a trial on charges of arson over a forest fire on the island of Hydra believed to have been sparked by fireworks, legal sources said Thursday.

The two men and the entire crew of the yacht have denied any wrongdoing. Eleven other crew members were freed on bail and with restrictions.

Death toll from Maui fire reaches 89

As the death toll from a wildfire that razed a historic Maui town reached 89, authorities warned Saturday that the effort to find and identify the dead was still in its early stages. It's already the deadliest U.S. wildfire for over a century.

Crews with cadaver dogs have covered just 3% of the search area, Maui Police Chief John Pelletier said.

Fire breaks out in residential East Attica town

A fire broke out in the seaside East Attica town of Artemida on Thursday morning and while it was burning close to homes in the residential area of Agios Ioannis, the fire service has brought it under control.

According to state broadcaster ERT, the blaze is still burning in an expanse of dry brush and weeds at the end of Ioanninon Street but is no longer threatening homes.
