Ionian, Aegean marine parks plan pushed to mid-2025

The establishment of two national marine parks in the Ionian and Aegean seas has been pushed back to mid-2025, according to Greece's Environment Ministry. The ministry's announcement coincides with new oil and gas exploration concessions, including a large area granted to Chevron, which has sparked concerns about the compatibility of environmental protection and hydrocarbon extraction.

Chevron survey gets the green light

The Environment and Energy Ministry has approved a proposal by Chevron and Helleniq Energy to search for hydrocarbons in the sea zones within the concession areas Block A2 and South of Peloponnese, according to a press release by the Hellenic Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company (HEREMA) on Wednesday.

No jail time for municipal engineer who took €10,000 kickback

A municipal engineer who accepted a 10,000-euro kickback in return for issuing a building progress report has been handed a three-year suspended sentence by a Thessaloniki court.

The court found him guilty of bribery but acquitted him on another charge of attempted extortion. It also accepted his lack of a prior criminal record as a mitigating factor. 

Thessaloniki doctor receives suspended sentence for bribe-taking

A doctor at a public hospital in Thessaloniki in northern Greece has been handed a 10-month suspended prison sentence for accepting bribes from patients. The Three-Member Misdemeanor Court of Thessaloniki found him guilty of bribery, with the court recognizing his previously clean record as a mitigating factor.

Chevron’s plan for Aphrodite

Chevron and its partners, Shell and NewMed Energy, have put forward a new $4 billion plan to develop the Aphrodite gas field off Cyprus. The proposal comes after Cyprus warned it might revoke the license for the project due to delays.

The updated plan aims to address Cyprus' concerns but comes with a significantly higher price tag compared to previous proposals.
