Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Wednesday hailed the fact that Romania has been given an extremely important portfolio in the European Commission - the one for regional policies - which represents "a success" for the country, and shows that its voice does count in Europe.

The row erupted as Romania, the last country to decide on its nomination for the next European Commission, sent Socialist MEP Corina Cretu on Thursday to be interviewed by the incoming commission chief, Jean-Claude Juncker.

Premier Victor Ponta said on Thursday that the possibility that Romania be assigned the EU Humanitarian Aid portfolio was never tackled in Brussels.

Marcel Lazar Lehel, a cab driver by profession, was jailed on Friday after attracting global notoriety for hacking into the Bush family’s emails and revealing artwork by the former president, including self-portraits in the bath.

He also hacked the emails of Romanian MEP Corina Cretu, revealing her intimate messages to former US Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Upon exiting the polling booth on Sunday, MEP Corina Cretu said she voted for a strong Romania and a Europe that is closer to the citizens' needs.
