For more than two decades, the Danish People’s Party ran on an unapologetically anti-immigration, populist platform, pushing Danish politics to the right by rejecting multiculturalism and opposing the transfer of sovereignty to Brussels.

Today, the DPP faces its own challenge from the right.

Denmark's parliament passed measures on Jan. 26 aimed at deterring refugees from seeking asylum, including confiscating valuables to pay for their stay, despite protests from international human rights organisations.

Liberal party leader Lars Lokke Rasmussen was appointed Danish prime minister on June 28 and named ministers in a government that has a small minority in parliament and will have to rely heavily on outside support on a vote by vote basis. 

The opposition centre-right group, which is led by former Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen defeated the ruling centre-left coalition in the general elections, which were held in Denmark on Thursday.

Denmark's largest purpose-built mosque, including the country's first minaret, opens on Thursday in Copenhagen's gritty northwest district after receiving 20.1 million euros ($27.2 million) endowment from Qatar.
