Opposition Centre-Right Bloc Wins Danish General Elections

The opposition centre-right group, which is led by former Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen defeated the ruling centre-left coalition in the general elections, which were held in Denmark on Thursday.

Although the Social Democratic Party gained the most seats and will be the largest party in the new parliament, its partners failed to gain as much votes as the opposition ones, the BBC reports.

Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt admitted defeat and resigned as leader of the Social Democratic Party.

The right wing, anti-immigration Danish People's Party (DPP) will become the second largest party in parliament.

Its leader Kristian Thulesen Dahl had previously dismissed the participation of his party in government, but he could yet be in a position to make a bid to become prime minister.

Rasmussen, who served as prime minister between 2009 and 2011 said in a victory speech that he would push for control of the influx of refugees.

According to Danish broadcaster DR, the Social Democratic Party won at least 26.3 % of the votes, the DPP is second with 21.1 %, followed by the Liberal Party of Denmark led by Rasmussen with 19.5 %.
