Everyone should embrace the lessons learned from the Battle of Gallipoli and entrust it to future generations, Culture and Tourism Minister Nabi Avcı has said.

Avcı spoke at a ceremony held at the Çanakkale Martyrs' Memorial in the northwestern province of Çanakkale (Dardanelles) on April 24 to commemorate the 102nd anniversary of the Gallipoli Campaign.

At the most critical stage of the First World War, the British War Council planned to conquer Istanbul by passing through the Dardanelles. Despite the British Navy's heavy artillery attacks on the Ottoman bastions guarding the Gallipoli Strait for one month starting in February 1915, they could not reach their goal. The biggest attack was launched on March 18, 1915.

A play featuring the coffins of "killed soldiers" and children playing the roles of "veteran soldiers" and "grieving mothers" at an elementary school in the Bağcılar district of Istanbul has drawn widespread criticism after photos emerged on social media. 

The new Çanakkale 1915 Bridge in northwestern Turkey will usher in a new era for the martyrs who vanquished their enemies 102 years ago in Çanakkale, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said March 18 at a Martyrs' Memorial Day ceremony that marked the 102nd anniversary of the Çanakkale Naval Victory.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge was taken place on March 18, the 102nd anniversary of the Çanakkale War. 

Turkey marks what it calls the Çanakkale War - known in English as the Battle of Gallipoli - every year on March 18, when Ottoman forces repelled an Allied World War I assault on the Dardanelles in 1915. 

Swiss police cancelled an event celebrating the 102nd anniversary of the naval victory of the Ottomans against the mighty Allied forces and commemorating thousands who lost their lives during the Gallipoli Campaign, saying it could disrupt public order on March 17.

The mayor of Gelibolu in northwestern Turkey on March 9 announced plans to invite Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman to the town.      

Bullets and cartridges from the 1915 Battle of Gallipoli have been stolen from the Namazgâh Bastion of Kilitbahir Castle in the western province of Çanakkale, daily Habertürk has reported.
