Firefighters on Thursday were dispatched to douse a blaze that broke out on forestland near the village of Salakos in western Rhodes.

A total of 34 firefighters, manning 15 engines, were sent to tackle the fire, and were aided by a water-dropping helicopter.

By early afternoon the blaze was not threatening residential areas.

About 30 firefighters assisted by 14 fire engines and two water-dropping helicopters were on Monday trying to contain a fire that broke out in Metohi, in Crete's Hania region.

Strong winds were stoking the blaze, which is mostly burning forest and farmland, making it difficult for firefighting crews to contain the flames.

Police have blocked traffic from reaching the area.

There was a fire in the region of "Angel Kanchev" Street near 127 "Ivan Nikolaevich Denkoglu" school in downtown Sofia.

The fire destroyed a garbage bin and spread to a nearby tree at 12 o'clock, said a reporter at OFFNews.

The fire did not cause major damage as it covered a small area. 

At 12:20 h the fire was extinguished by the firefighters who arrived at the spot.
