A group of students from the National Technical University of Athens challenged Education Minister Costas Gavroglou to spend one night at their dorm after presenting a set of damning photographs illustrating poor safety and sanitation conditions to one of his close aides.

The ministries of Education and Digital Policy announced on Friday that student residences on university campuses across the country will be equipped with Wi-Fi networks.

To this end, the General Secretariat of Communications has reportedly secured funding so as not to burden university budgets.

Some 10,000 private dormitory licenses will be transferred to the supervision of the Education Ministry (MEB), the undersecretary has said, amid cases of child abuse and security issues in local dormitories that have been publicized by the media.

Tension broke out between police and university students protesting outside the Education Ministry in Athens on Wednesday.

Protesters were demonstrating over conditions at state-run halls of residence.

The families of children killed in a dormitory fire in the southern Turkish district of Aladağ in November 2016 have said the local directorate of the Education Ministry placed them in that dormitory simply "to keep it open."
