Mahmut Özer appointed as new education minister

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has appointed Mahmut Özer as the country's new education minister following the resignation of Ziya Selçuk, according to a decree published on Aug. 6.

In the decision, it was stated that Selçuk's request for resignation was accepted.

Before Selçuk resigned, Özer was serving as his deputy.

Turkey extends distance learning of schools until Feb 15

Face-to-face education in Turkey will not start before Feb. 15, as the Education Ministry has extended the period of distance learning at schools amid a high number of COVID-19 cases.

Distance education in primary, secondary, and high schools will continue until Jan. 22, the end of the first semester of the 2020-2021 academic year, the ministry said in a circular issued on Dec.18.

Turkey, Moldova sign medical aid agreement

International agreements signed by Turkey with Moldova, and Palestine in the field of health were published in the country's Official Gazette on May 20. 

According to the gazette, the "agreement between the government of the Republic of Turkey and the government of the Republic of Moldova on donation in the field of health" was signed on April 17 in Ankara.

Social media debate stirred after university admission exams brought forward amid COVID-19

The Turkish government has decided to bring forward the nationwide university admission exams of this year to an earlier date in late June than scheduled as part of COVID-19 measures, drawing reaction on social media, as youngsters launched the hashtag #SandiktaGorusuruz (We'll see you at the ballot box) late May 4 on Twitter.

The sales process of Doğa Koleji, a well-known private school with campuses all across the country which had been grappling with financial troubles, has finally been completed after months-long protests by teachers against the management.

The transfer of the institution to Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ) was registered in trade records on Jan. 20.

Ex-exam chief indicted over FETÖ ties

An Ankara public prosecutor indicted the former head of Turkey's central admission board for universities on Dec. 31 over his links to the FETÖ.

Ali Demir, who served as chairman of the country's Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) between 2010 and 2015, was charged with misconduct and helping members of the terror group cheat on their exams.
