Relentless pursuit of economic growth, twinned with the impact of climate change, has put an "unprecedented" one million species at risk of extinction, scientists said on May 6 in a landmark report on the damage done by modern civilization to the natural world.

Nearly half of all insect species worldwide are in rapid decline and a third could disappear altogether, according to a study warning of dire consequences for crop pollination and natural food chains, reports AFP. 

Climate change increases the risk of an 'extinction domino effect' that could annihilate all life on Earth, researchers have warned, reports Daily Mail.    

The theory, known as 'co-extinctions', means an organism dies out because it depends on another doomed species.
