If food waste was a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, said a UN official.

The world is wasting food for 0 billion before it is even delivered to stores, UN figures show. The share of lost non-refundable food is 14%.

The survey shows that one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted.

The Greek branch of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has launched an initiative in cooperation with Unilever Food Solutions aimed at curbing food waste at three hotels.

Turkey is wasting about 15 percent of its national income, according to the Turkish Foundation for Waste Reduction (TİSVA), a non-governmental initiative established to ensure efficient and effective use of resources and prevention of waste, including food waste in the community. 

Eight years ago as debt-laden Greece was almost sinking into a humanitarian crisis, and soup kitchens started sprouting across the country, a group of friends joined forces to help bridge donors with charities to make the most of the wave of solidarity, fighting food waste and protecting the environment at the same time.

In Bulgaria, nearly 670,000 tons of food goes to the trash every year. The reason - households buy more than they can consume.

Sofia Municipality as of 4th of February started an awareness campaign in 30 kindergartens to promote food waste reduction, reports BNT. 

AFP - Americans waste nearly 150,000 tons of food per day, amounting to about one pound (422 grams) per person, and fruits and vegetables are mostly what gets tossed, said a study Wednesday.

Conservation group WWF and Impact Hub join forces to co-host the annual Saving Food Festival, a family-friendly event aimed at raising awareness about food waste. Environmental experts, chefs and food bloggers, among others, will be conducting talks and workshops on how to start making a difference on the planet by limiting food waste at home. Doors open at 11 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

A charity has opened in Denmark the first food surplus supermarket called Wefood which will sell products at prices 30 to 50 percentage cheaper than the ordinary supermarkets.

The supermarket aims to help reduce the 700,000 tonnes of food waste Denmark citizens produce every year.
