Foreign involvement in the Syrian Civil War

The United States is in active contact with Turkey on the formation of a possible safe zone in northern Syria, a State Department official said on Feb. 19.

The Syrian government and rebels swapped prisoners on Feb. 12 as part of a peace process brokered by Russia, Iran and Turkey, the Turkish government said.

The U.S. military is preparing to withdraw all of its forces from Syria by the end of April, the Wall Street Journal has reported on Feb. 7.

The U.S. State Department on Feb. 4 called on countries to take in foreign fighters captured by YPG in Syria, two days ahead of a meeting in Washington of dozens of coalition partners fighting ISIL to discuss the way forward in Syria.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Turkey and Syria have been conducting foreign policy in low profile contacts through its spy agency with the Syrian regime.

A Russian delegation, led by Russian special presidential envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev and Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin, last week held a meeting with Turkey's Deputy Foreign Minister Sedat Önal to discuss efforts for a political process in Syria, including the launch of a constitutional committee as an important stage in resolving the Syrian crisis.

A delegation of Turkey's Defense Ministry on Feb. 2 concluded talks with Russian officials over recent developments in Syria.

Following talks with his Turkish counterpart in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the two leaders discussed how they planned to stabilize the situation in the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib, writes Radio Free Europe. 

This will happen if the UN Security Council fails to acts urgently to prohibit Israel's incursions into its airspace, RT is reporting.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan will hold Syria talks in Moscow on Wednesday, with Turkey saying they will focus on Ankara's so-called "security zone" in northern Syria, reported AFP.
