Turkish organizations dispatched 10 trucks of humanitarian aid Feb. 19 to Syria's northwestern city of Idlib, which has been under severe bombardment from forces of the Bashar al-Assad regime.

Strains between Turkey and Russia over the escalating Syrian offensive in Idlib appear not to have shaken Turkish plans to deploy Russian missile defense systems, a senior US official said on Friday, despite a threat of US sanctions.

Russia's foreign ministry on Thursday called on Turkey to refrain from making provocative statements about events in Syria amid rising tensions over the Syrian province of Idlib.

He called on Europeans to find a way to influence the resolution of the conflict.
"We are witnessing conflicts between the Syrian regime and Turkish forces, not to mention the risk of conflict between Turkish and Russian soldiers," Borrell told the European Parliament last night in a speech issued today by his cabinet.

Turkish defense minister discussed regional issues with his Russian counterpart over the phone, an official statement from Russia said on Jan. 20.

Turkey's Hulusi Akar spoke to Russia's Sergey Shoygu, according to Russia's National Defense Ministry.

The officials discussed recent developments in the region and North Africa.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu discussed the latest developments in the Middle East with his U.S. counterpart Mike Pompeo over the phone on Jan. 12.

Pompeo "reiterated the need for NATO to play a greater role in the region and stressed the U.S. commitment to the UN-facilitated peace process in Syria," State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement.

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar received U.S. Special Envoy for Syria James Jeffrey, Turkey's Ministry of National Defense announced on Jan. 10.

In a written statement, the ministry said Akar and Jeffrey discussed issues of regional security with a special focus on Syria.
