Trolley bus, Proastiakos service to be affected next week by stoppages

Getting around Athens will be that much harder next week as trolley bus and Proastiakos suburban railway drivers have both announced stoppages.

On Wednesday, the capital will not have any trolley bus services from noon to 5 p.m. as workers attend a general assembly that had been postponed.

Woman's body discovered in capital's main landfill

Police on Thursday were seeking to identify a woman whose corpse was found in Athens's main landfill at Fyli, northwestern Attica.

The discovery of the body was reported by EDSNA, the local government association responsible for waste management.

No details were available about the suspected cause of death.

Police exchange fire with would-be safe robbers

Police in Athens in the early hours of Tuesday exchanged fire with a group of men believed to be behind a string of safe robberies at industrial facilities around Attica and Viotia.

The incident occurred around 4.30 a.m. as officers of the OPKE squad tried to question the passengers of a car in Ano Liosia, northern Athens, following an attempted break-in at a pharmaceutical company.

Radioactive waste turned away from Athens landfill

Authorities raised the alarm after radioactive waste was detected on a truck near Athens, the Environment Ministry said on Monday.

The ministry said it was informed on Sunday that a container transporting waste from the VIOPA industrial park in Keratea, eastern Attica, to the landfill at Fyli, west of Athens, was emitting radioactive iodine, picked up by sensors at the landfill.
