Journalist unions in Greece launched a 24-hour strike Tuesday, joining broader labor unrest ahead of a nationwide general strike planned for Wednesday.

The General Council of 'Unitatea' - Metro Free Trade Union (USLM) decided on Tuesday to postpone the launch of the general strike until after a first meeting with the new Transport Minister, informs USLM.

Two more labor unions said Thursday that they will take part in a general strike on May 17. They are the Hellenic Federation of Private Sector Employees (OIYE) and the Public Hospital Workers Union (POEDIN).

The strike is being held to express dissatisfaction with the latest austerity measures agreed by the government and the country's creditors.

Greece will be brought to a halt on Thursday as the country's biggest labor unions - representing public and private sector workers - have announced a 24-hour general strike to protest plans for labor reforms and tax hikes.

The action will also disrupt transport as buses and trolley will be out of service from 9 a.m until 9 p.m., when the shift ends. 

The government decided Thursday to submit two new bills, reforming the pension and tax systems, to Parliament at the weekend and vote on them on Sunday night in a bid to secure the backing of MPs before Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos faces his eurozone peers in Brussels on Monday.

All flights between the Bulgarian and Greek capitals are cancelled due to a general strike taking place in Greece on Thursday.

Public sector union ADEDY called for a nationwide strike against the planned pensions reforms.

As a result of air traffic controllers deciding to join the strike, there will be no incoming or outgoing flights at Greek airports on Thursday.
