The authorities want to lockdown New Dehli due to excessive air pollution

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6,4 has struck an area in northeast India, posing a serious threat to thousands of people.

The powerful earthquake, which originated in Tezpur, Assam near the Himalayas had a depth of 34 kilometres when it hit Wednesday at 7.51am (local time). 

Two aftershocks were also reported within minutes of the initial quake, according to India Today. 

Turkey on Feb. 7 extended its solidarity to India after a Himalayan glacier broke off in the country's north, leading to a massive flood.

At least 25 people, many of them schoolchildren, were killed when a speeding bus fell into a canal in southern India on Saturday, an official and media reports said, quoted by ABC News. 

The accident occurred in Mandya district as the driver lost control of the vehicle while going at a high speed, said G. Parameshwaran, the Karnataka state deputy chief minister.

Part of a pedestrian bridge at a Mumbai train station collapsed Tuesday morning during heavy rains, trapping at least one person and injuring five.

A small plane crashed into a construction site in a densely populated area of India's financial capital Mumbai on June 28, killing five people including one on the ground, officials said. 

India has unveiled a new weapon to combat air pollution - an "anti-smog cannon" that authorities hope to clear the air over New Delhi, AFP informs.

But environmentalists believe that this is a temporary solution as it will not solve the real cause of the air problem.

Toxic smog thickens in New Delhi

Relations between India and China have deteriorated in recent times. The two Asian neighbours have warned each other over the current situation in Doklam, an area near Sikkim that China claims as its own. India deployed soldiers in Doklam early in June in order to stop the construction of a road by the Chinese Army. New Delhi claimed that the Chinese action has security implications for India.
