In a beautiful photo-essay, British site Guardian shows off the unique beauties of Mount Athos, located on northern peninsula in Macedonia. The “Holy Mountain”, as it is known, has been the spiritual centre for Eastern Orthodox Christianity since the 8th Century AD, and consists of 20 monasteries and numerous sketes and approximately 2,000 monks.
Cold snap makes life even more miserable for refugees
Freezing temperatures, snow, rain and gale-force winds have made life even more difficult for tens of thousands of migrants and refugees scattered at camps across the country.
Mitsotakis visits Mt Athos
Opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis was visiting the Mount Athos peninsula in northern Greece on Thursday. The New Democracy leader was expected to visit several monasteries in the monastic community.
During his visit Mitsotakis noted that while he had visited Mount Athos on several occasions, this was his first in his capacity as opposition chief.

Vladimir Putin’s wine is from Mt. Athos
The “official wine of the Kremlin” is from Mount Athos, commonly referred to as the Holy Mountain, an autonomous monastic state. Its wine is called Kormilitsa, meaning nurse in Russian, and it is served by the Kremlin in high-level meetings with foreign dignitaries.

General Hospital’s Jonathan Jackson on Mt. Athos!
Hollywood actor Jonathan Jackson, well-known from his stint on the American soap opera General Hospital and a current protagonist on the TV series Nashville, visited the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos last week with his 12-year-old son Caleb.
Jackson, who was baptized in the Orthodox Christian faith in 2012, met with Vatopedi Abbot Efraim over the weekend.
