Cyprus: A close associate of Trump met with Christodoulides ahead of the US elections
The government spokesman for Cyprus, Konstantinos Letymbiotis speaking to RIK, referring to the re-election of Donald Trump to the US presidency, said that recently “Cyprus-US relations have entered a new era“.
He stressed that Cyprus and the US are now strategic partners, underlining that Cyprus is among the very few states in the area that have an institutionalised strategic dialogue with America.
He noted that under the Trump administration, a statement of intent was signed by then Foreign Ministers Mike Pompeo and Nikos Christodoulides and with this starting point the relationship continued, intensified and strengthened under Biden’s presidency.
Letymbiotis revealed that an associate of US President-elect Donald Trump was in Cyprus and a meeting was held at the Presidential Palace with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.
“The meeting was not made public, and at the meeting the common aspirations and the possibility of D. Trump taking office after the elections were discussed,” Letymbiotis said.
“We can’t say who it is for obvious reasons,” he said in response to a question.
He clarified that this colleague was in Cyprus for other reasons and it was he who sought the meeting with Nikos Christodoulides.
When asked, the Cypriot Government Spokesperson denied that it was Mike Pompeo, Trump’s associate who was at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, due to his recent presence in Greece.
Regarding Nicosia’s goals, Letymbiotis said that “we want to maintain these close relations, we hope to further intensify cooperation.”
