Researchers at Thessaloniki's Aristotle University have warned that excessive use of fireplaces instead of other forms of heating creates dangerous pollution inside homes, saying that microparticles in closed spaces can exceed maximum safety levels set by European authorities within just two or three hours of lighting a fire.

Centralized heating and hot water in five metropolitan districts is suspended due to a breakdown.

A major breakdown of the heat supply left the southern districts of Sofia to  freezing temperatures and without hot water, reported BGNES.

Sofia municipality will propose legislative changes to regulate the level of fuel for domestic combustion heating, as there are no such standards at present.

"Toplofikatsia Sofia" is ready to start the new heating season in the capital, announced the municipal company.
