The main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) has finalized its nominations for mayoral candidates across İzmir province, including both the metropolitan municipality and its districts, in preparation for the upcoming elections.

A documentary depicting the environmental problems the flamingos of the Delta of Gediz face has won the "Best Environmental Movie" award at the Los Angeles Documentary Film Festival.

The Gediz Delta, located in the western province of İzmir's Çiğli district, has been added to the "Birding Places" list, an EU platform displaying all the bird watching regions across the world.

"With this platform, millions will be aware of Gediz Delta and Çiğli," Utku Gümrükçü, the mayor of the district, told Demirören News Agency.

Some nine flamingos were found dead on an isolated land near the Meles Delta in the Bayraklı district of the Aegean province of İzmir on March 28.

"At first sight, we thought they were poisoned to death, but after the examinations, we found out the cause of death was not poison," said Ürgen Tepe, a coordinator in the veterinary services of the Çiğli Municipality.
