Port authority to acquire 11 boats for transfer of patients from islands

The port authority is set to acquire 11 boats that will be used to transfer patients from islands to hospitals, under an agreement signed on Monday between Maritime Affairs and Island Policy Minister Christos Stylianides and the Greek subsidiary of a Danish maritime safety equipment manufacturer.

Man arrested for possession of 3,290 fireworks in Crete

Police arrested a man for violations of fireworks legislation on Holy Saturday afternoon in Ierapetra, southeastern Crete.

The arrest was made during a check at a business he operates, where a total of 3,290 fireworks items were found and seized.

The investigation is being conducted by the Ierapetra Security Department.

Most untouched beaches found in Mani, Karpathos

Eastern Mani in southern Greece and the islands of Karpathos and Syros have been deemed to have the most environmentally friendly beaches, and will be spared of umbrella loungers this year, according to a list drafted by the Finance Ministry of 198 "untouched" beaches in 49 municipalities, published on Friday.

Evacuation recommendation issued as large wildfire breaks out on Crete

Residents in four villages in Crete have been recommended to evacuate as firefighters battle a large wildfire in a mountainous area northeast of Ierapetra.

Strong northerly winds are fanning the blaze, which broke out near Schinokapsala, in Lasithi regional unit, pushing the fire towards populated areas on the southern coast.

Crete demolitions saga continues

After the Court of First Instance of Lasithi on the island of Crete temporarily halted the demolition of unauthorized constructions on the beaches of Elounda, the Police Directorate of Lasithi has now granted a tacit postponement to the demolitions in Ierapetra.

Concerns have allegedly been raised by law enforcement about the potential for these demolitions to incite social turmoil.
