Firefighters called to 36 blazes within 24 hours
Greece's firefighting services were called on to put out 36 forest fires within 24 hours as high temperatures created tinder-dry conditions, sources said on Monday.

Robber nabbed after targeting same home twice
A 49-year-old man was arrested in Ierapetra, Crete on Thursday on charges he burgled the same house twice within the space of two days.
According to reports, the suspect stole 11,400 euros from the home of a 77-year-old on Wednesday morning, but was arrested by police.
An investigation revealed that he had robbed the same home two days earlier, taking 36,400 euros.

3.1 earthquake strikes off southern coast of Crete
A 3.1 tremor in the Richter scale was felt by the locals in the southern parts of the island of Crete, Wedesday morning. The earthquake was estimated at a 10km depth and struck 47km southwest off the coast of the town of Ierapetra. There were no reports of damage.

Teacher on Crete gets 54-year sentence for child abuse
A 53-year-old teacher who molested an 8-year-old girl on the island of Crete has been sentenced to 54 years in prison.
The 53-year-old was arrested in February after a report by the girl's parents.
Another 13 cases emerged after that.
The Ierapetra court found him guilty in a total of four cases. He is expected to serve 25 years.
Extended strike sets farmers against seamen in Crete
The Port of Heraklion, Crete became a battlefield when hundreds of of angry farmers attacked striking seamen on Friday with flares, setting the ticket offices of ANEK on fire.
Naxos fishing boats to supply nearby islands as PNO strike continues
Farmers and livestock farmers on Naxos reportedly used fishing boats on Friday in order to transport supplies, such as dairy products, to neighboring islands, following an extended strike by Greece's seamen's union, PNO, which has resulted in no ferry services.
Reports suggested the farmers and livestock farmers would continue supplying islands in the coming days.
New 48-hour strike declared by seamen
In protest at the latest round of pension cuts, a worsening tax status and increased job insecurity, seamen have declared a new 48-hour strike that will keep ships docked until Tuesday.
