2024 tax returns: the extension, the new deadlines and what to watch out for

The percentage of taxpayers who have filed their tax returns reached 97% by yesterday, with the new deadline set for August 2.

In total, some 6,235,000 taxpayers have already filed tax returns.

The August 2 deadline also applies to those who wish to correct their return by filing an amendment.

Payout for the whistleblowers

A bonus of up to 3,000 euros awaits taxpayers who, through the appodixi application, have detected falsified mechanisms and fake receipts in their transactions with various businesses.

The tax audit mechanism has proceeded to check important cases of complaints, while the relevant fines provided for by the legislation have already been imposed.

Tax evasion getting contained

Tax audits have made a huge leap in recent years, mostly in terms of their quality and not so much in terms of their number, which is more or less on the same level as previous years

Bureau audits, complex cross-checks and data now obtained from dozens of sources have curbed tax evasion, uncovering undeclared income.

Tax transparency

State authorities must get rid of the afflictions that have survived the country's bankruptcy. One of them is the practice of opening and then abandoning tax audits, without continuity and a binding timetable.

However, where there are unclear timetables, suspicions of expediency and opacity also thrive. That is why it is important to regulate these functions strictly.

50-60% tax on undeclared wealth

According to sources, the Greek government has reached a compromise with its creditors on the matter of collecting revenue from undeclared wealth. The recommended plan provides that taxpayers who voluntarily disclose undeclared wealth will be charged between 50 and 60% of the difference emerging after a tax audit on bank deposits and declared wealth.
