Google Doodle marks Labor Day
On May 1, as workers in many parts of the world enjoy a day off, Google's latest Doodle celebrates the history of Labor Day, also known as International Workers' Day.
The holiday originated in the late 19th century during the Industrial Revolution in the US and was established by the labor movement, which fought for the regulation of American work schedules and other worker rights.

The strike affected all intercity rail traffic, almost all city traffic as well as most airports. The strike also covers maritime traffic in Germany as well as highways.

Actors and theater workers have called a 48-hour strike on Wednesday and Thursday in protest at a draft government bill on pay in the sector.
Unionists said that under the proposed law, the "remuneration of artists in the wider public sector and in private entities will not be determined by collective labor agreements but by the respective government."

On May 1, many countries around the world celebrate International Labor Day and Workers' Solidarity.
The beginning was made on May 1, 1886 in the US when unions conduct unofficial national strike, which involved over 300,000 workers across the country demanding the introduction of an official eight-hour day.

Unionism and trade unionists
Nobody questions the right to strike - the only question concerns the way this right is often wasted. Nobody questions the value of unionism either, without which employees would be greatly disadvantaged. But unionism does not exist to further the interests of trade unionists.

General strike in Greece: Transportation suspended, banks closed, media shut down
All private and state-owned media in Greece have launched a 24-hour strike today, joining the workers' general strike organized by the General Confederation of Employees in Greece.
The strike will last from Wednesday at six in the morning until about the same time on Thursday, Athens News Agency (ANA) reports.

Bulgaria Celebrates International Workers' Day
Bulgaria is celebrating the International Workers' Day, known as Labour and International Worker's Solidarity Day in this country. On 1 May 1886, over 300,000 workers across the United States went on strike in support of an 8-hour work day. Later, 1 May was globally recognised as an international labour day.

Editorial: The degradation of trade unionism
Workers who are struggling to survive are entirely indifferent to the ongoing trench warfare over the offices of power and privilege in trade unions.
While the objective of unions is supposed to be to defend and guarantee the rights of workers, in fact they do whatever they can to degrade them.
