COVID-19 has directly claimed tens of thousands of U.S. lives, but conditions stemming from the novel coronavirus — rampant unemployment, isolation and an uncertain future — could lead to 75,000 deaths from drug or alcohol abuse and suicide, new research suggests.

Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, said that dealing with inequalities will have to be a central element of leaders' response to the concerns of populist movements, in a speech as quoted by the Associated Press on Jan. 18.

Istanbul has the best record in regards to gender equality among 81 Turkish provinces, while the eastern province of Bitlis has been named the least equalitarian province, according to a recent survey.

In the message delivered on Friday, on the Day of Equal Opportunities between Women and Men, Prime Minister Victor Ponta stresses that both genders should be treated with the same respect in the occupational realm and inside the family, and that double standards must disappear.

President Klaus Iohannis has promulgated on Friday several laws, among which the one stipulating the Day of Equal Opportunities between women and men, to be on May 8.
