International Association for the Reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures

In response to recent remarks by British Museum director Hartwig Fischer that the Parthenon Marbles will never be returned to Greece, Dame Janet Suzman, chair of the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles, insisted on Saturday they are in the wrong space and in need of the Attic light and blue skies.

Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos referred on Monday to broadening international support for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece during a visit to the capital's Acropolis Museum which was built to house the sculptures, currently in the British Museum.

A UNESCO committee for the return of cultural property "recognized for the first time the historical, cultural, legal and ethical aspects of the return by Britain of the Parthenon Sculptures to Greece," the Ministry of Culture said on Thursday.

An international group advocating the return of marble sculptures taken from Greece's historic Parthenon temple has been actively seeking the repatriation from a German museum of a partial centaur's head, the ANA-MPA news agency reported on Thursday.

The time to return the Parthenon Marble to Greece is near, according to Alexis Mantheakis, chairman of the International Parthenon Sculptures Action Committee.

Greece is offering the British Museum unique ancient archaeological pieces in exchange for the Parthenon Marbles, reports the Independent. From the Independent:

While Greek government through Culture Minister Aristidis Baltas says that it no longer mulling legal action to get back Parthenon marbles antiquities claiming that it has slim chances winning, the UN General Assembly adopts the Resolution on “Return or restitution of cultural property to the countries of origin with express reference to the return of the Parthenon Marbles.

The Museum of Ancient History of Heidelberg intends to return to fragments of the Erechtheion, the ancient Greek temple on the north side of the Acropolis, to Greece. The announcement was made by the Culture ministry on Friday.

Italian lecturer Luke Losiko loves Greece so much that he created the “Greece Needs Love” organization to help and support Greek artists during the economic crisis and promote Greek culture. He traveled from London to Athens by bike to draw attention to the Parthenon Marbles and the need for their repatriation.

A Manichean media war is, unfortunately, being waged over the fate of the Parthenon Marbles, which comprise a prominent display at the British Museum and for whom official Greece has lobbied for repatriation since the 1980s.
