17 people detained after attack at Istanbul election campaign event, official says

Turkish authorities detained 17 people in connection with an attack at an Istanbul campaign event for upcoming municipal elections, Turkey 's interior minister said Sunday.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya provided no details on the assailants' affiliation or motive for the attack that critically injured a woman.

3 defendants released in İstiklal bomb attack case

Three defendants have been released in the case of the 2022 terrorist bombing that claimed the lives of six people on İstiklal Avenue, one of the tourist hotspots in Istanbul's Beyoğlu district.

The trial continued in relation to the terrorist bomb attack on İstiklal Avenue on Nov. 13, 2022, in which six people were killed and 99 were wounded.

Death toll rises to 44 in twin bombings in Istanbul

The death toll in the deadly Istanbul bomb attacks has risen to 44, Health Minister Recep Akdağ announced on Dec. 12.

Some 36 police officers were among the victims, Akdağ said.  

The Kurdistan Freedom Hawks (TAK), an offshoot linked to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), claimed responsibility for the attack on Dec. 11.

Thirty seven people, thrirty police officers and seven civilians, were killed and 166 wounded in Saturday’s twin bombings in Istanbul.
The explosions, one large blast followed by a smaller one, occurred about 11 p.m. local time (3 p.m. ET) after a heavily attended football game at Besiktas Vodafone Arena.
