Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis does not rule out entering a future government coalition should he be elected to lead a new center-left political party next month.

Athens was named the Emerging Cultural City of the Year for 2017 at the Leading Culture Destinations Award in London on Friday. The Greek capital was lauded for managing to a maintain a thriving cultural scene despite the country's protracted financial crisis.

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis on Thursday said that during his two-term tenure at the helm of the capital's municipal authority he succeeded in reducing its debts by half.

Democratic Alignment has said that it welcomes the news that Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis intends to run against its incumbent leader, Fofi Gennimata, in party leadership elections in October. "Kaminis is welcome to the battle, as is every candidacy that adds to, and doesn't take away from the effort to create a new movement of the center-left," the party said in an announcement.

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis on Thursday announced the appointment of a chief digital officer, who will be responsible for upgrading the digital capacity of the city's public services.

"Our aim is to better serve our citizens and the business world with results and transparency," said Kaminis as he introduced Constantinos Hambidis as the man who would fill this new position.

The Greek capital is hosting just under one-third of some 60,000 refugees and migrants who should be more fairly distributed around other parts of the country, Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis said on Wednesday.

Alternate Citizens' Protection Minister Nikos Toskas accused Athens Mayor Girogos Kaminis on Friday of "political hypocrisy" after the latter's call for his resignation over the state of the capital's universities.

Toskas said Kaminis's call was politically motivated and driven by his ambition to play a central role on the country's political stage.
