Twelve Greece municipalities advance in property value reassessment
Twelve municipalities in Greece have advanced to the next phase of property value reassessments by private evaluators under the Ministry of Finance.
These municipalities, including Ag. Anargyroi-Kamatero, Vrilissia, Halandri, Glyfada, Piraeus, Ithaca, Karpathos, Loutraki, Symi, Pyrgos, Rhodes and Astypalea, seek to lower property tax values, arguing they exceed market rates.
Most untouched beaches found in Mani, Karpathos
Eastern Mani in southern Greece and the islands of Karpathos and Syros have been deemed to have the most environmentally friendly beaches, and will be spared of umbrella loungers this year, according to a list drafted by the Finance Ministry of 198 "untouched" beaches in 49 municipalities, published on Friday.

TV crew finds decomposed body on Karpathos beach
A TV crew filming for a series called "Wild Greece" discovered a badly decomposed body on the small island of Saria, north of Karpathos, on Friday.
Presenters, who were accompanied by local nature protection officers and coast guard when they arrived on the island, noticed the washed up on Palatia beach.

The lure of traditional summer festivals
Every summer, festivals on the Greek islands and the mainland begin in late June and end on August 15 with the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, like in Olympos on Karpathos (pictured). With feasts and dances celebrating customs and tradition, the festivals bring together locals and visitors, while there has also been a trend recently of young people returning to them.

Curtains for remote island school due to lack of students
A primary school teacher stands in front of a school on the southern Aegean island of Karpathos with its two remaining pupils. The school will not open this September after 63 years as the two children will move to a nearby school. Located in Diafani, the primary school and kindergarten in the area was built in 1960, with money from the prefecture and Michael Avdellis. It had about 100 pupils.
Many Aegean islands have insufficient power supply
Problems in the supply of electricity on non-interconnected islands have been considerable this summer after similar issues last year too.
The old production units are failing one after the other due to faults, while in many cases there are no spare parts - due to their age.

Karpathos: Donkeys rescued from remote beach
Two donkeys who got stuck on a remote beach on the Dodecanese island of Karpathos have been taken to safety following a two-hour rescue operation by local emergency services.
The animals, who had been left by their owners to graze freely before they would be put to work during the summer season, had wandered down to an isolated beach but were unable to climb back.
